Personal Injury Protection
Accidents on the road are a fact of life, not matter how good a
driver you are so isn't it a good idea to look after yourself with a
personal injury protection plan? There is more to this subject than
just a person's belief that it will not happen to them, especially
when they have other people to think about if the worst should
happen. For people with families it is better they try to
incorporate personal injury protection or Pip into an existing
health insurance plan if it will allow. This all sounds great in
theory but insurance of any kind is expensive and this can be just
another costly addition to the family budget.
This needs to be looked at carefully to ensure it meets the family
needs before it is taken out. In America, a number of states have
made it law to have some form of personal injury and home cover but
the amount varies. This difference is highlighted by the amount of
cover required by a driver in Alaska being ten times the amount
required by a similar driver in Florida. Although there are still
some states that have not passed a law on personal injury protection
at this time, there is no reason why you should wait until it has
before you arrange it.
A large amount is paid out against these plans for the insured and
any person traveling with them, up to four fifths of the costs. As a
no fault policy though, the plan pays for loss of earnings, medical
expenses and various other costs for the policy holder and his
passengers even if the insured was responsible for the situation. In
order to keep costs down when you purchase your cover it is worth
checking your current insurance in case there are areas that are
already covered, thereby reducing the amount of protection required.
By checking carefully you may discover that certain costs like
medical bills and other expenses are already part of your current
cover.
So, the good news is that in some cases, no further cover will be
required whereas you may have to arrange a small policy in others.
An additional factor to consider is the driving ability and record
of the policy holder because this will not only dictate the need for
personal injury protection but can affect the overall cost. What
many drivers do not realize is that although they may be covered by
their own health insurance for medical bills, other passengers,
unless they are named on the policy, probably will not be. If any of
your regular passengers are inadequately covered or not covered at
all, you will need personal injury protection in order to keep them
covered.
Every driver has a responsibility to look after the safety of the
passengers they carry in the vehicle. Just because your state does
not make it compulsory to have a personal injury protection plan in
force, does not mean you should neglect your civic responsibilities
towards others. How much insurance you need depends, mainly on your
age, so if you are middle-aged or older, have good health and
liability insurance policies, then you will probably only need
minimal injury insurance. Younger drivers however, do not fair so
well if they are inexperienced with little insurance cover in place
but they are often in greater need of good health insurance cover to
protect themselves and any family they have.
